Ph: (336) 789-1657
Billy Maxwell Jackson resided in Winston-Salem from 1965 to 2005, where he shared a studio at 106C Reynolda Village (Sculptor’s Studio) with other gifted sculptors. He and his wife, Ponza have recently moved back to Mount Airy. Billy is a realist. Throughout his life he has drawn, carved, and taken pottery. Working in water-based clays and plastline, his finished works are in terracotta, bronze, and cold cast marble or bronze.
Billy has studied and traveled with Earline Heat King (his greatest inspiration) of Winston-Salem. They and their small group have worked at Sculptor House Casting, New York, New York; Tallix Art Casting, Beacon, New York, and have visited many sculpture exhibits, such as the National Sculpture Society, New York, New York. Billy’s introduction to sculpting began with instruction from Debby Doty and Duncan Lewis of Winston-Salem. Billy continued to take workshops and courses whenever possible. He has studied in several workshops with Michel Van der Sommen of Greensboro, North Carolina. He found great inspiration and sculpting skills studying under Lincoln Fox at Scottsdale Art School. One such skill was armature building, which now enables Billy to sculpt life-like animation in almost any size. He has also studied with Jerry Cox of both Scottsdale Art School and Loveland Art School, where he learned more about mocketts and their use to build three fourths to life-sized and bas reliefs. In addition, Billy has also visited Bruno Lucchesi and his wife, and was given a personal tour of Bruno’s studio in Greenwich Village. His most recent attended workshop was under Martine Vaugel, who teaches in Los Angeles, New York, France, and most recently in Ashville, North Carolina. Billy plans to continue attending workshops under well-known sculptors whose work he admires.
Billy’s commissions can be found in corporate and private collections in the United States and England, as well as, in the Mount Airy High School. He has exhibited in numerous national juried shows with award-winning results. Billy holds memberships in The Associated Artists of Winston-Salem, The Surry Arts Council, and The National Sculpture Society. At the present time, Billy is represented exclusively by The Gallery Group & Art Studio, Inc. located at 162A West Pine Street Mount Airy, NC 27030. Billy can be contacted through The Gallery Group at (336) 786-0057 if interested in commissioned estimates, portrait busts, 18-inch to life-size sculpture and bas relief or sculpture classes for the individual or a group.
