Do-It-Yourself Art Cards

Greeting cards printed at home can be an inexpensive way to promote your work and please your friends and loved ones at the same time. It is relatively easy to do and not terribly expensive.

MATERIALS:

  • The Art - Art must be done by hand and scanned in or done completely in computer.
  • Paper - The paper I find works best is 8 1/2" by 11" 60 lb. Offset Paper. It can be purchased at local print shop.
  • Envelopes - Envelopes must be # 5 1/2 Baronial envelopes. Color should match paper color.

SET-UP:

A good word processing application that accepts images is necessary for this project. Microsoft Word or Quark Xpress for example.

Set up a new document in application. Document should be 8 1/2" by 11" and "Portrait". Margins should be 1/4" all around. Page should be divided into quarters. Each quarter being 4 1/4" by 5 1/2".

Your art image should be in a format that can be inserted into document and that your printer can handle. Pict format for example. Insert the image centered into the lower right quarter of document page. If you want a text message to appear on the inside of the card it must be placed centered in the upper left quarter of document page. In order for text message to print correctly it must be upside-down in upper left quarter of document page.

PRINTING:

Do NOT print fold lines!

Print a test page. Printed page should look similar to this:

Fold printout in half from top to bottom with image facing you on right side.

Fold in half again so that image is on front of card and message is on inside right.

Closed fold should be at the top of the card.

Image and text may need to be adjusted in document for correct alignment on print-out.
