- Decide exactly what type art you do.
- Evaluate your work honestly. Is it good enough? Is there a demand for this type work?
- Decide where it fits the best. Galleries, festivals, Internet?
- Reconcile your idea of art and your idea of business. You can't make a living at art without understanding that it is a business.
- Evaluate the law of supply and demand. Who will buy it? Where are they? Can you create a demand where none exists?
- Make as many contacts as you can. The more people who know you, the more likely you will sell your work.
- Contact as many people as you can who are in a position to promote your work. Agents, curators, dealers.
- Create an effective portfolio.
- Promote your work every where you can.
- Don't be bashful! Art is a business where the "squeaky wheel gets the grease".
- Learn as much as you can about business in general and the art business in particular.
- If you are sure of yourself and your work, market it with that attitude.
- Keep good records!
- Don't undersell yourself.
- Don't let customer negotiate you out of your profit.
- You can't get what you want, until you know what you want.
