How to Re-size and Format an Image File

Got image files or photos that you want to put in a Web site but don't know how to prepare them?

Difficulty Level: average      Time Required: N/A

Here's How:
  1. Scan image or have it scanned.
  2. Open image in image editing application such as PhotoShop.
  3. Check to see if application is set up in pixel or inch units.
  4. Do a "View Image Size" and see what the actual size is.
  5. You can change the units now from pixels to inch and vice versa.
  6. Make sure "Proportional" is checked.
  7. Type in desired width or height only. Application will automatically re-size proportionally.
  8. Type in desired image resolution. Hint: Most online Web browsers display images at 72 pixels per inch.
  9. Check image in actual size to see if it is correct.
  10. Do any editing or color corrections now.
  11. Do "Save As" command and save into either .jpg or .gif format.

Tips:
  1. The lower the screen resolution of an image, the faster it loads into browser.
  2. For art images it is best to make thumbnail images of the art pieces.
  3. It is best not to put too many images on one page. It makes page load slowly.
